Marina's Sketchbook

We're always interested in other people's projects.

It's almost an obsession, it's all about "who did what, how interesting, is it relevant or not". It's that feeling of respect/envy for those who are capable of something dazzling, whether they are or are not "competitors". We sensed that strongly in Four Lines, so we decided to accept those feelings and make it a healthy habit. Online we can find tons of interesting material, but it seems to be impossible to know something about the person behind the work, as if it was a picture with no credits. The undergrowth of creatives who feed this infinity of links is what we're looking foward to know, little by little. 

So we asked Marina to send us her drawings, answer questions, write her to-do list.

Thesselle: Where did you study?
Marina: I graduated in Communication's Design from Politecnico di Milano, with a european exchange in France that has been kind of a turnover in terms of life changing experience. After graduating I got into a type design course and that's what I would like to do for now.

T: What is your occupation at the moment?

M: I'm working in a graphic design studio in Milan. I do a little bit of everything, the most interesting thing is probably tha packaging.

T: What do you usually drink?

M: analcoholic, water and coffee. Alcoholic, I passionately go for white wine and vodkalemon.

T: Did you have a trauma?

M: I don't think so. I can't stand the blood view, but i don't know if is it based n a trauma.

T: What is it your addiction?

M: If you mean that as a drug, it's the opinion (and approval) of those who I care about.

T: Your favorite place?

M: There is a place where I always go when I'm sad (or really happy). It's a banch near home, you can see all the landscape, from the owland to the mountains.

T: A song suggestion?

M: I would say Uncanny Beats, Furious. Not sure you'll appreciate.

T: A song that really turns you off?

M: Gelato al cioccolato, Pupo. Gets me damn nervous.

T: The most relevant book you read in the last year?

M: It was not in the last year, but the most important book I ever read it's Novecento, Baricco. Mst important for me, obviously.

T: Sweet or salty?

M: Salty, absolutely.

Marina's 10 things-to-do list:

• gain the necessary opulence to live (or survive) out from my parent's place.
• have dogs
• set my mood swings (mostly for others)
• read more
• draw more, bigger, with cooler tools
• eat less kebab
• quit smoking (again)
• travel to Honolulu. stay in Honolulu for a while.
• hear more from the far friends
• get to see, sooner or later in this universe, someone I have unsolved stuff with and unsaid words for.

Ci interessano i progetti degli altri.

Potremmo dire di esserne quasi ossessionati, è tutto un "chi ha fatto cosa quanto è interessante quanto può influenzarci". C'è un sentimento di rispetto e invidia per chi riesce a colpirti, che poi sia un tuo diretto "competitor" o meno. L'abbiamo sentito molto forte in Four Lines, e abbiamo deciso di accogliere questi sentimenti e farne una sana abitudine. In rete possiamo trovare tonnellate di materiale interessante al quale attingere, ma difficilmente sappiamo qualcosa della persona che c'è dietro, come un'immagine senza credits. Il sottobosco di creativi che alimenta questo fiume di links, noi vogliamo avere occasione di conoscerlo, un po' per volta.

Abbiamo quindi chiesto a Marina di mandarci disegni, rispondere a domande e scrivere punti della sua To Do List.

Thesselle: Quali sono stati i tuoi studi?
Marina: Ho studiato Design della Comunicazione al Politecnico di Milano, tre anni intervallati da un anno di erasmus in Francia (che diciamo pure è stato abbastanza la svolta della mia vita). Dopo la laurea ho seguito un corso di type design e conto di continuare su questa strada in un futuro semi prossimo.

T: Di cosa ti occupi in questo periodo?

M: Al momento lavoro in uno studio di grafica a Milano. Si fa un po' di tutto, la cosa più interessante è il packaging

T: Che cosa bevi di solito?

M: Di analcolico acqua e caffè. Di alcolico mi dedico con passione al vino bianco e al vodkalemon.

T: Qual'è stato il tuo trauma?

M: Il mio trauma… Boh. Ne ho tanti, non ce n'è uno in particolare. Non sopporto la vista del sangue, non so se questo sia dovuto ad un trauma

T: Qual'è la tua dipendenza?

M: Se intendi dipendenza come droga, allora dipendo dall'opinione (e dall'approvazione) della gente a cui tengo.

T: Qual'è il tuo posto preferito?

M: C'è un posto dove vado spesso quando sono triste (o molto felice). Non è il mio posto preferito ma vado lì perché è figo: è una panchina che c'è lungo la strada sopra casa mia. C'è il panorama e vedo tutta la pianura fino alle montagne.

T: Cosa ci consigli di ascoltare?

M: Vi consiglio Uncanny Beats di Furious. Non so se apprezzerete.

T: Una canzone che proprio non puoi soffrire?

M: Gelato al cioccolato di Pupo. Mi fa innervosire di brutto.

T: Il libro più importante che hai letto nell'ultimo anno?

M: Nell'ultimo anno niente di così importante, ma se vuoi il libro più importante che ho letto in generale è Novecento di Baricco. Più importante per me, ovviamente.


T: Dolce o salato?
M: Salato assolutamente.


La lista delle 10 cose da fare di Marina:

• raggiungere sufficiente opulenza per vivere (o sopravvivere) fuori da casa dei miei.
• avere uno o più cani.
• regolare maggiormente gli sbalzi di umore (questo lo faccio per gli altri).
• leggere di più.
• disegnare di più, più grande, e su supporti più fighi.
• mangiare meno kebab.
• ri-smettere di fumare.
• andare a honolulu e restarci per un po'.
• sentire più spesso gli amigos lontani.
• rivedere prima o poi in questo universo qualcuno con cui sono rimaste cose in sospeso e frasi non dette.
